Market Insights: Updating Return to the Office Expectations

Views from real estate occupiers and landlords on the return to office, pt. 2

Earlier in 2021, MRI Software partnered with CoreNet Global, the leading association for corporate real estate professionals, to conduct a joint survey of real estate occupiers and landlords worldwide regarding their views on the return to work. In September 2021, MRI and CoreNet reprised the original survey to understand how their views changed over the previous six-month period. The team asked many of the same questions from the previous survey and added a few new ones to drive additional insight.

Since the release of the original study, the MRI Market Insights team has found that signs of optimism were put on hold by the rise of the Delta variant. Economic recovery remains fragile and employment is improving, but many service industries are hampered by hesitant attendance and a limited workforce.

The new data indicates that the gap between the tenant view and the landlord view is not as significant as reported in the initial report.

  • Changing expectations around whether remote work will impact landlords
  • Continued flexibility for remote staff
  • More formal policies for remote and office work
  • Expanded use of technology to manage workplace requirements
